India is a land of various cultures and traditions. So lets take a glimpse of some of the famous traditional paintings of India. So lets get started.
1. Madhubani Paintings
Madhubani paintings were originated in the Mithila region of Bihar .This spectacular art style was unknown to the outside world until discovered by the British colonial William G. Archer in 1934 while inspecting the damage after the massive Bihar earthquake. Archer was amazed by the beautiful illustrations on the exposed interior walls of the house. The designs are characterised by eye-catching geometrical patterns, symbolic images, and scenes from mythology. Bharni, Katchni, Tantrik, Godna, and Kohbar are the five distinct styles of Madhubani painting.
2. Kalamkari
This 3000-year-old organic art of hand and block printing was traditionally used for making narrative scrolls and panels. This exquisite folk art has a strong connect with Persian motifs. Kalamkari derives its name from kalam or pen and is a legacy that has been handed down from generation to generation in Andhra Pradesh. Kalamkari art primarily involves earthy colours like indigo, green, rust, black and mustard.
3. Warli Paintings
The 2500-year-old tradition of Warli paintings of the Thane and Nasik areas of Maharashtra are closely linked with nature and social rituals of the tribe. Warli paintings showcase daily activities of the local people of that community like farming, dancing, hunting, praying etc. Traditionally, women used twigs to draw lively designs with rice paste on mud walls of tribal houses to mark celebrations of harvests or weddings. S Warli Art resembles the execution of pre-historic cave paintings.
4. Kalighat Paintings
Kalighat painting is believed to have originated in the Kalighat temple in Kolkata in the 19th century . In this painting, mainly depictions of the characters of Hindu deities and traditional mythology were seen at that time. In ancient times, the painters of this art used to depict various gods and goddesses through this art by singing it to people in pat paintings. They used to make this picture on clothes and palm leaves. The specialty of these paintings was that depictions taken from India like Ramayana , Mahabharata etc. have been happening since old times. In this painting, depiction of different sections of society such as women, entrepreneurs, laborers, etc. is found mainly in Bengal from time to time. West Bengal'sPatuva painting is also a link in this series. In this style of painting, painters depict scenes based on Ramayana , Mahabharata and other kimvadantis in long papers and sing and explain the illustration.
5. Gond Painting
Gond paintings are a form of painting from folk and tribal art that is practiced by one of the largest tribes in India with whom it shares its name. Gond comes from the Dravidian expression, Kond which means ‘the green mountain’. While Gond paintings are considered to be from predominantly from Madhya Pradesh, it is also quite common in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh and Odisha. Gond art has become so predominant that the Government of India has stepped in to preserve their art form for future generations to enjoy.
